The Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul together with Members of the Executive Council officiated over the ceremonial renaming of Schroeder street to the Alfred Gubula street in Upington.

The renaming forms part of Governments programme of honouring our heroes and heroines for their selfless struggle against colonial rule.

Tata uAlfred Gubula was a leader of the United Democratic Front, He was also leader of the âSave the Patriots Campaign’, this was a national campaign to save all comrades on death row throughout the country. Tata uAlfred Gubula led the Paballelo community uprisings in the mid 1980s. Working together with human rights lawyers, he brought global attention to the Upington 26 case.

It is important for us to recognise that name changes are important for us to reclaim our heritage and cultural identity, as well as honour our heroes and heroines who fought for the liberation of this country and this Province.
