The Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul joined the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and the Deputy Minister Ms. Samantha Graeme-Mar¨ at the official handover of operating responsibility to National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI).

NRWDI took over the responsibility to operate and manage Vaalputs Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility from Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA). This follows the granting of the Nuclear Installation Licence (NIL-43) by the National Nuclear Regulator. This marks a major milestone for safe domestic radioactive waste management.

Vaalputs Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility,located in the Northern Cape is the only radioactive waste disposal facility on the Continent. It is responsible to dispose of low  to Middle level waste with one of its clients being Eskom.
