Justice Bekebeke
Mr Justice Bekebeke is the Director- General for the Northern Cape Provincial Government. He holds a B PROC law degree as well as a LLB post graduate degree from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) obtained in 1996 and 1997 respectively. He also read for a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Constitutional Law at the University of South Africa in 2002. Mr Bekebeke attended and completed the practical Law Course at the University of Cape Town in 1997. He served his articles of clerkship at the law firm Finday and Tait Incorporated in Cape Town.
He was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa (Northern Cape Division) in 1998. Mr Bekebeke started his career as Street Law Project Assistant in 1994 at the UWC Street Law Legal Aid Clinic as an adviser under the auspices of the Community Law Centre at UWC.
In 1995 he was appointed as a Legal Aid Adviser at the UWC Legal Aid Centre, which provides free legal advice and representation to the poor and indigent living in the communities surrounding the University. The position was voluntary and he held same until he graduated in 1997. In 1995 he was also appointed as a tutor of Roman Law by the UWC Law Faculty. During this time he taught and tutored second and third year law students for 2 years until he graduated.
He was appointed manager: Electoral Matters - Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Northern Cape from 1998 to 2002. Prior to his appointment as Director-General in 2010, Mr Bekebeke served as the Provincial Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Northern Cape.
He is both a distinguished administrator and a seasoned academic who brings deep policy expertise and a wealth of experience to the Provincial Government. Mr Bekebeke is a Board Member: Project Steering Committee on New Universities; a Standard Generation Body member on Human Rights and Peace Education; Provincial Chairperson: Northern Cape Provincial Heritage Agency; Council Member: South African Heritage Resource Agency and a Committee Member: Drafting Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.
