On behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Government, Premier Dr. Zamani Saul joins many across the Province in congratulating the Windhoek Draught Griquas rugby team, who have advanced to the Carling Currie Cup final after beating the Vodacom Bulls in the semi-finals over the past weekend. This momentous qualifier is a moment that will be embedded in our memory forever.
The young team led by captain Ruan Steenkamp displayed great sportsmanship and a hunger to win. For this, Provincial Government commends the team; their hard work, commitment, and dedication have now reaped the benefits, and they have become true ambassadors and role models for the youth.
As a province, we take immense pride in the team's achievement and are assured that this will go a long way in advancing social cohesion. The sport continues to be a vital tool in nation-building, the support of our athletes and teams across different racial, religious and other boundaries is indicative of the deepening of our nationhood and the building of a common South African identity. Provincial Government remains committed to providing an ideal platform for young aspiring athletes to express their sporting talent in the Northern Cape with the resources we have available.
Ahead of the finals against the Pumas this weekend, Premier Saul wishes the team well and encourages the people of the Northern Cape to rally behind them and come out in their numbers to the Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley in support of the team. We are confident they will lift the coveted Carling Cup Trophy after 52 years.
