Media release on Claims of Gender Based Violence

User Rating: 3 / 5

The Office of the Premier has noted with disgust the malicious and deceitful twitter handle, @Dbn_Survivors that alleges to expose perpetrators of Gender Based Violence through false claims; where the Premier, Dr. Zamani Saul, is also being implicated.  This comes at a time in our country when we are facing the scourge of violence against women and children. Dr Saul has always been an ardent advocate for the rights of women and more specific the rights of children and the disgusting allegations are dismissed with the urgency and contempt it deserves. We therefore firmly believe that this a lousy attempt to denigrate the integrity of the Premier.

The Premier has already referred the specific tweet and Twitter handle to the relevant law enforcement agencies for investigation and further action.  We remain resolute in our fight against gender based violence and such distractions will not deter us.

Media Release – Protest Action at Department of Health

User Rating: 5 / 5

Star ActiveStar ActiveStar ActiveStar ActiveStar Active

The Premier of the Northern, Ms. Sylvia Lucas, on behalf of the Provincial Executive condemns the senseless and malicious acts of violence, intimidation and destruction of state property perpetuated under the auspices of industrial action.“Whilst we recognise the right of workers to embark on industrial action, it should be done in a respectable, orderly and peaceful manner and should not infringe on the rights of other workers willing to work. It should also not be done in a deliberate and inhumane manner of depriving people in need of medical assistance there right to access it. This we reject with the contempt it deserves”, said the Premier.

Ms. Lucas would like to make it abundantly clear that this will no longer be tolerated. We engaged with NEHAWU in good faith and remain committed to finding a peaceful and workable solution to the demands of NEHAWU. We will however not be held ransom with violence and intimidation and will request that law enforcement agencies deal with the violence, destruction and intimidation in the appropriate and legal manner.

We call on NEHAWU to act with restraint and with respect for the rights of their colleagues and those they serve. The Premier would also like to thank those diligent staff members, who despite the difficult circumstances remain focused on delivering on the mandate of health services. These officials stepped outside their scope of work by cleaning up the hospital so that it can be conducive for the provision of health services.
