The Premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul, accompanied by officials from the Office of the Premier partnered with private sector stakeholders such as Standard Bank, ABSA and Old Mutual to embark on a Mandela Day outreach to Petrusville and van der Kloof.
Guided by the strategy of Mandela Day to significantly change the manner in which the International Nelson Mandela Day impacts people's lives, the Premier had initial engagements with schools as a means of building a relationship that will create sustainable impact in the lives of those that need help the most.
The new strategy approach for International Nelson Mandela Day identifies 5 key focus areas for global partnerships to focus on to have strategic impact:
1. Education and Literacy
2. Food and Nutrition
3. Shelter
4. Sanitation
5. Active Citizenship
In line with this, agricultural starter packs to compliment the school nutrition programme, uniforms, a school library and books were handed over. Post school education information was also shared with grade 12 learners and entrepreneurial skills development were shared with out of school youth.
Staff from the Office of the Premier partook in a town cleaning campaign and gave support to the community soup kitchen.
These initiatives will not be once off and will be monitored in order to make everyday a Mandela day and create a lasting legacy.
