The Northern Cape Community will be given access to the Provincial Archives when the Provincial Government officially opens the new Archives Repository on Friday, 24 January 2014. The multi-million rand Provincial Archives Repository is situated on the corner of Silson and Green Street towards the Legislature Complex in Kimberley. It is scheduled to be officially opened by Premier Sylvia Lucas together with the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Pauline Williams.
The Repository will provide for acquisition, preservation and documentation of public and non- public records. This vital resource will also enable citizens to monitor the activities of Government thus holding government accountable for its actions. It will further play a critical role in ensuring social cohesion and nation-building by enabling the preservation of all histories and stories of the people of the Northern Cape both present and past for posterity.
With the opening of the first University in the Northern Cape, the Department believes that services to be offered by the Provincial Archives Repository will greatly enhance the capability of the province to offer additional research facility and a platform for outreach services such as historical awareness campaigns and oral history projects. The Repository will also provide a rightful home for the Northern Cape Heritage. This process will commence with the repatriation of the Northern Cape Archival Records which are currently housed in the Western Cape.
Records in the custody of archives is an invaluable resource for knowledge industries in both government and private sector agencies in making good and credible decisions.
