Security Awareness: Loss of laptops

The  Directorates: Security Management Services as well as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have noticed with serious concern that the loss of laptops has risen dramatically. The loss of these laptops has mainly been due to theft, either from offices or vehicles.

Colleagues are requested to ensure that laptops are protected, either in the offices, vehicles or at home.
Investigations have revealed that most of the laptops stolen from offices were due to negligence. Officials neglect to lock their offices when they knock off or when going to the restrooms. The  Internal Security Policies clearly indicate that the loss or damage of the State's assets through negligent behaviour will result into a disciplinary action.
It is therefore recommended that officials comply with the following security measures:

  • Always lock the office when going out, even if it is for a short while
  • Ensure that the laptop is secured by the locking cable (obtainable from ICT)
  • Laptops must be secured in the boot of the vehicle, not on the seat. In a bakkie, the laptop must be stored under the seat at least.
  • At home, ensure that the laptop is stored in a secure place
  • Do not take the laptop with you unless it is necessary
  • Be aware of the vehicles locks jamming devices at the malls and public areas. Always check that the doors of the vehicle are locked before leaving the vehicle
  • Report loss/ theft of laptop immediately to SAPS and to Security Management of OTP.
  • Familiarise yourselves with the Notebook and Internal Security Policies (on the OTP intranet).
